Athletic Club’s hopes of advancing in the Champions League were dealt a decisive blow after a 3–2 home defeat to Sporting CP at San Mamés, leaving the Basque side just outside the play off positions. Knowing that only a win would keep their European campaign alive, Athletic started with urgency and were rewarded almost immediately. The hosts regained control as the first half progressed, pressing higher and forcing errors in Sporting’s half. Their renewed intensity paid off after the half hour mark when Gorka Guruzeta capitalised on a turnover, struck the post with his initial effort and reacted quickest to score from the rebound. At that stage, Athletic appeared well positioned, balancing attacking intent with caution. Sporting remained dangerous, however, and the match stayed finely poised as both sides adjusted their tempo and shape approaching the break.
In the second half, Athletic struggled to maintain the same intensity as fatigue set in, allowing Sporting to increase their influence. The visitors’ pressure eventually told when Francisco Trincão broke through the centre and finished calmly past Unai Simón to level the match. With qualification still within reach, Athletic pushed forward in search of a winner, creating late chances but leaving themselves exposed. That risk proved costly in stoppage time when Sporting countered decisively, and a rebound finish sealed the victory. The result left Athletic 29th overall, one point shy of progression, with injuries to key players compounding a disappointing European exit.
