Portugal is set to strengthen its transatlantic connectivity as Delta Air Lines launches a new direct route between Porto and New York, marking a significant development in travel and tourism links between the two regions. The service will connect Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport with John F Kennedy International Airport, offering passengers a direct option between northern Portugal and one of the busiest gateways in the United States. The expansion comes as Porto Airport celebrates its 80th anniversary and continues to grow its international network.
The addition of this route builds on Porto Airport’s expanding global footprint, which already includes around 130 destinations. Officials say the introduction of a direct US connection reinforces the airport’s role as a strategic hub for the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. The new service is expected to improve accessibility for both tourists and business travelers, while also supporting trade, cultural exchange and investment flows between Portugal and the United States.
Airport leadership highlighted the importance of the move, noting that the arrival of a major international airline signals growing confidence in the region’s market potential. Rui Alves, Director of Porto Airport, pointed to strong passenger growth trends, with traffic more than doubling since 2019 and forecasts suggesting further expansion exceeding 20 percent this year. He emphasized that the route reflects a broader effort to position Porto as a key entry point for international visitors exploring northern Portugal.
The launch is also the result of coordinated efforts between aviation authorities and tourism organizations, including ANA Aeroportos de Portugal, VINCI Airports and national tourism bodies. These partnerships have focused on strengthening international connectivity and promoting Portugal as a competitive destination in global travel markets. The collaboration has been instrumental in attracting new airlines and routes, particularly at a time when demand for long haul travel continues to recover and evolve.
