Portugal has once again strengthened its international tourism reputation after three of its destinations were included in the 2026 list of the 20 European Best Destinations, a ranking based on votes from travellers across 154 countries.

Câmara de Lobos in Madeira, Lisbon and the Costa Vicentina in the Algarve secured positions among Europe’s most desirable travel locations, reflecting the country’s growing appeal to visitors seeking authenticity, sustainability and natural beauty.

The highest ranked Portuguese entry was Câmara de Lobos, which placed sixth overall. The coastal village in Madeira is widely recognised for its colourful fishing boats, dramatic cliffs and strong maritime heritage. Voters highlighted its distinctive atmosphere and traditional gastronomy, as well as its balance between local culture and scenic landscapes. The recognition reinforces Madeira’s position as a year round tourism destination known for its mild climate and outdoor experiences.

Lisbon secured ninth place in the ranking, continuing its consistent presence among Europe’s most visited capitals. The Portuguese capital was praised for combining historic architecture with contemporary creativity. Visitors cited its neighbourhood character, cultural institutions, gastronomy and growing innovation scene as key attractions. The city’s investment in urban regeneration and sustainable mobility has also contributed to its rising profile in international travel surveys.

Completing Portugal’s representation, the Costa Vicentina ranked twelfth. Located along the southwestern coastline, the region has gained popularity for its preserved natural environment and less commercialised beaches compared to other Algarve hotspots. Known for rugged cliffs, protected parks and traditional fishing villages, Costa Vicentina is increasingly positioned as a quieter alternative for travellers seeking outdoor activities such as hiking and surfing.

The 2026 European ranking is led Madrid, followed Nicosia and the Slovenian region of Stajerska. While Italy recorded the highest number of destinations on the list, Portugal’s inclusion stands out for the diversity of its offerings, ranging from island tourism to metropolitan culture and coastal nature.

The annual selection process evaluates multiple indicators including tourism growth data from Eurostat, online engagement metrics and sustainability commitments. Destinations that demonstrate balanced development and environmental awareness tend to perform strongly in the voting process.

Tourism remains one of Portugal’s key economic sectors, contributing significantly to employment and national income. Industry analysts note that international distinctions such as these enhance the country’s visibility in competitive global markets and support long term destination branding strategies.

With continued investment in infrastructure, heritage preservation and sustainable tourism initiatives, Portugal’s recognition among Europe’s top destinations reflects both consistent visitor satisfaction and strategic planning within the sector.
