Ukraine is working closely with SpaceX to prevent Russian forces from using the Starlink satellite internet system to guide long range attack drones, following evidence that the technology has appeared on hostile aircraft. Ukrainian defence officials said they have identified Starlink terminals attached to Russian drones used in recent strikes, raising concerns over the misuse of Western technology in attacks on civilian infrastructure. According to Ukrainian authorities, the discovery prompted immediate contact with SpaceX to address the issue and restrict unauthorised access. Officials said the cooperation aims to ensure that satellite connectivity intended to support Ukraine’s defence is not exploited opposing forces. The matter has gained urgency as Russian drone attacks continue to target populated areas, increasing pressure on Kyiv to safeguard communication technologies used across the battlefield.
Ukraine’s defence minister said SpaceX responded quickly and confirmed work had begun to resolve the situation. He stressed that Western technology should serve to protect civilians and support democratic states rather than facilitate violence. Ukraine has relied heavily on Starlink since the early stages of the conflict, using thousands of terminals to maintain battlefield communications and operate certain drone missions. The system is valued for its stable connection and resistance to electronic interference, making it difficult to disrupt through conventional jamming methods. Despite political disagreements in the past, Ukrainian forces continue to depend on the network as a critical component of military operations. SpaceX has previously stated that it does not sell or supply Starlink services to Russia or its armed forces.
Ukrainian officials said the challenge lies in the difficulty of detecting or disabling Starlink equipped drones once they are airborne. A newly appointed adviser to the defence ministry said there have been numerous instances of drones using satellite connectivity to carry out attacks, including strikes that resulted in civilian casualties. He noted that traditional electronic warfare tools are ineffective against the system, leaving cooperation with SpaceX as the primary solution. Analysts have also pointed to growing evidence that Russia has been experimenting with satellite connected drones since late 2024. As the conflict evolves, Ukrainian authorities say securing control over advanced communication technologies remains essential to limiting further attacks and protecting civilian targets.
