The municipality of Monção has announced the opening of an application period for the purchase of industrial plots in the Messegães Business Zone, marking a new step in its strategy to strengthen local economic activity and attract investment. The initiative, led the Monção City Council, covers a total area of 6.3 hectares, of which 4.2 hectares are dedicated to fully serviced infrastructure designed to support business and industrial use. According to the local authority, the application process will begin on 28 January, offering companies and entrepreneurs the opportunity to establish operations in a development positioned as a key growth area within the municipality. The announcement reflects broader efforts smaller Portuguese regions to create competitive business environments outside major metropolitan centres, while leveraging strategic location, modern facilities and targeted incentives to stimulate sustainable economic development.

A total of nine industrial plots are available for sale, with interested parties given until 27 February to submit their applications. The municipality has outlined a clear evaluation framework intended to prioritise projects that contribute directly to the local economy. Preference will be given to applicants whose registered office or tax residence is based in Monção, accounting for half of the overall assessment score. Additional criteria include the length of time a business has been operating, weighted at 40 percent, and the number of jobs proposed under each project, which represents the remaining 10 percent. Local officials say this structure is designed to balance support for established enterprises with incentives for employment creation, while ensuring that the development reinforces the existing business fabric rather than functioning solely as a speculative real estate offering.

The Messegães Business Zone has been promoted as a modern development equipped with shared services intended to encourage industrial symbiosis and circular economy practices. Municipal leaders argue that these features enhance the site’s appeal to investors seeking efficient, interconnected operations with lower environmental impact. Its geographic position near the Spanish region of Galicia is also highlighted as a strategic advantage, offering cross border business opportunities and access to broader Iberian markets. combining infrastructure readiness, sustainability principles and proximity to international transport and trade routes, the municipality aims to position the business zone as a competitive destination for new investment. The project aligns with wider national goals of decentralising economic growth and promoting regional development through targeted industrial and business planning.
