Starbucks has expanded its presence in Portugal with the opening of a new store in Porto, reinforcing its strategy to grow in high traffic retail locations. The latest outlet, located in NorteShopping, brings the total number of Starbucks stores in the city to nine and increases the brand’s nationwide footprint to 33 locations. The move reflects continued demand for premium coffee experiences and social spaces, as international brands deepen their presence in Portugal’s urban retail and lifestyle markets.

The new store spans 62 square metres and has been designed with a modern layout aimed at both casual visitors and remote workers. The space integrates seating areas suited for social interaction as well as individual work, aligning with broader shifts in consumer behavior where cafes increasingly serve as flexible work environments. Situated within one of Porto’s busiest shopping centres, the location is expected to attract a steady flow of customers throughout the day, benefiting from both retail traffic and the city’s strong tourism activity.

The opening was marked a community focused initiative led Alsea, the company responsible for managing the brand in Portugal. Through its “Opening with a Cause” program, all proceeds from the first day of operations were allocated to Casa do Caminho, a Porto based organization that supports children in vulnerable situations. The initiative highlights a growing emphasis among multinational brands on combining commercial expansion with local social engagement and community impact.

Company representatives emphasized that the expansion aligns with a long term strategy to strengthen accessibility and brand presence in key urban hubs. António Romero, Managing Director of Starbucks Iberia, noted that opening in a prominent location like NorteShopping reflects the company’s focus on convenience and customer experience. The brand has also introduced promotional offers to mark the launch, including exclusive items for early visitors and additional rewards for users of its mobile loyalty program, encouraging repeat engagement.

The expansion also carries employment implications, with Starbucks now surpassing 300 jobs across Portugal. As the company continues to grow its network, it contributes to the broader retail and service sector workforce while reinforcing Porto’s position as a key commercial centre in the country. The integration of international brands within major shopping destinations reflects ongoing investment in Portugal’s consumer economy, supported tourism growth and evolving lifestyle trends that favor experiential retail environments.
