Weather conditions across mainland Portugal began to stabilise on Tuesday morning as Storm Kristin moved eastward toward Spain, easing its grip on much of the country after a night of severe weather. Meteorological authorities indicated that while strong winds were still being felt in southern and inland districts, the worst of the storm had passed for most regions. The central area was reported as the most affected, with the storm entering through the Leiria region before progressing inland during the early hours. Coastal and elevated locations experienced intense gusts, with particularly challenging conditions recorded overnight. Emergency monitoring remained in place as residual wind and unsettled seas continued to pose localized risks, especially in exposed areas. Officials noted gradual improvement through the morning as the storm system weakened and moved away from Portuguese territory.

During the night, exceptionally strong wind gusts were recorded in several locations, highlighting the intensity of the storm as it crossed the mainland. Coastal points registered gusts exceeding 140 kilometres per hour, while inland areas also experienced severe wind speeds that disrupted transport and infrastructure. In the Algarve, very intense gusts continued into the early morning, affecting both coastal zones and mountainous areas. Authorities maintained weather warnings as conditions gradually improved, emphasizing that sudden gusts and rough seas could still occur. Civil protection services remained on high alert along large stretches of the coastline, coordinating with local authorities to respond to incidents linked to fallen trees, damaged structures, and power disruptions caused the storm’s passage.

Storm Kristin followed a series of recent weather systems that have affected Portugal in quick succession, bringing repeated episodes of rain, wind, snow, and maritime instability. The storm was classified as an explosive cyclogenesis event, a term used for rapidly intensifying depressions capable of producing extreme weather conditions. Several districts reported significant impacts, with emergency services responding to numerous incidents during the night. In the Lisbon district, a fatal incident was reported after a tree fell onto a vehicle during the storm. As conditions stabilised, authorities urged continued caution, particularly near the coastline and in areas where cleanup operations were still underway, noting that lingering effects can persist even after the main system has moved away.
