Three Bangladeshi nationals were injured late Tuesday night after gunmen opened fire at a restaurant in central Lisbon, in an incident that has raised fresh concerns about public safety in the Martim Moniz area.
The shooting took place at a restaurant located on Rua do Benformoso, a street known for its multicultural businesses and significant South Asian community presence. According to eyewitness accounts, two to three masked men arrived in a private vehicle shortly before midnight and began firing shots toward the establishment before fleeing the scene.
Emergency services responded quickly after multiple calls from residents and nearshop owners reporting gunfire. The three victims, aged between 29 and 42, were transported to Hospital de São José for treatment. Medical sources indicated that one of the men suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and remains under close medical supervision. A second victim was struck in the leg, while the third sustained a head injury. Hospital officials described the latter two injuries as serious but not life threatening.
Police officers from the Public Security Police immediately cordoned off the surrounding streets, restricting access to pedestrians and traffic while forensic teams began collecting evidence. Investigators recovered bullet casings from the scene and are reviewing surveillance footage from nearbusinesses to identify the suspects and the vehicle used in the attack.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the shooting was targeted or random. Residents in the area described hearing several rapid gunshots followed screams and confusion as people sought shelter inside nearshops and apartments. Some witnesses reported seeing the suspects wearing dark clothing and face coverings.
The Bangladesh Embassy in Lisbon confirmed that it is in contact with Portuguese authorities and hospital representatives. Embassy officials stated that they are closely monitoring the condition of the injured men and stand ready to provide necessary consular assistance, including legal and medical support.
Rua do Benformoso has been under increased police monitoring in recent months following earlier security operations aimed at addressing criminal activity in parts of the neighbourhood. The district remains one of Lisbon’s most commercially active and culturally diverse zones, attracting both residents and visitors throughout the week.
Law enforcement officials have reinforced patrols in the Martim Moniz area as a precautionary measure while the investigation continues. No arrests had been announced at the time of publication, and authorities have urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
