All customers affected the recent severe storms in mainland Portugal have now had their electricity supply restored, according to energy company EDP. The announcement was made chief executive Miguel Stilwell d’Andrade during a teleconference with analysts following the presentation of the group’s 2025 results.

EDP, through its subsidiary E-Redes, is responsible for operating the electricity distribution network across mainland Portugal. The company confirmed that power has been restored to 100 percent of customers impacted the storms, with only a small number of isolated technical situations still being resolved.

According to the CEO, the extreme weather events began at the end of January and extended into February, bringing winds exceeding 200 kilometres per hour. The storms caused extensive physical damage to critical infrastructure, including transmission and distribution networks, as well as company assets.

Approximately 6,000 kilometres of electricity network were affected, with around 5,800 towers sustaining damage. The scale of the disruption required a significant mobilisation effort, with about 2,400 personnel deployed on the ground. Support teams arrived not only from within Portugal but also from Spain, Brazil, France and Ireland to assist in restoration efforts.

Miguel Stilwell d’Andrade described the response as immediate and highly coordinated, emphasising the collaboration between internal teams and international partners. Technical crews worked continuously to repair damaged lines, replace infrastructure and stabilise affected areas to minimise prolonged outages.

The restoration process involved complex logistical coordination, particularly in rural and hard to access regions where fallen towers and debris created additional challenges. Engineers and maintenance teams operated in difficult weather conditions to reconnect communities and critical services.

The storms were described as among the most damaging in recent years in terms of impact on the national electricity grid. Infrastructure resilience and emergency preparedness have become key priorities for utilities across Europe as extreme weather events increase in frequency and intensity.

EDP acknowledged the efforts of network technicians, hydroelectric plant teams and operational staff who worked around the clock throughout the crisis. The company stated that the experience would contribute to future infrastructure reinforcement and contingency planning strategies.

With electricity supply now restored nationwide, attention is turning to longer term repairs and structural assessments to strengthen grid reliability. Energy authorities continue to monitor the system to ensure stability following the widespread disruptions caused the storms.
