José Carlos Rolo, former mayor of Albufeira and a long standing figure in Algarve local politics, has died at the age of 70 after being admitted to Faro Hospital, a source from the Social Democratic Party confirmed.
Rolo stepped down from the leadership of Albufeira City Council following the most recent local elections, in which he was not re elected. In those elections, Rui Cristina of the Chega party secured the highest number of votes and succeeded him as mayor. The political transition marked the end of Rolo’s tenure at the head of one of the Algarve’s most prominent municipalities.
News of his death prompted tributes from political leaders across the region. Cristóvão Norte, president of the PSD in the Algarve, expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to Rolo’s family and friends. In a public message, he described the former mayor as an example of dedication and public service, emphasising his lifelong commitment to the community.
According to Cristóvão Norte, José Carlos Rolo devoted many years of his life to serving others and approached public office with integrity and loyalty. He highlighted Rolo’s ability to foster unity and avoid division, noting that throughout his career he consistently demonstrated a discreet yet determined approach to leadership.
Before entering municipal leadership, Rolo worked as a teacher, a role that shaped much of his public life. He later moved into local politics, serving as a councillor before eventually becoming mayor of Albufeira. Those who worked with him describe a public servant guided a strong sense of civic responsibility and a deep connection to his hometown.
As mayor, Rolo oversaw a period of continued development in Albufeira, a municipality known internationally for tourism and as one of the Algarve’s economic engines. His leadership coincided with challenges linked to seasonal tourism pressures, infrastructure demands and local governance reforms. Political colleagues credit him with maintaining stability and prioritising community cohesion during times of change.
Cristóvão Norte also recalled Rolo’s personal qualities, stating that he never observed ill intent or divisive behaviour in him. Instead, he described a leader motivated the desire to bring people together and strengthen local institutions. The PSD in the Algarve declared that it is in mourning following his passing.
The circumstances surrounding his hospital admission have not been detailed publicly. Faro Hospital has not released additional information, and the family has requested privacy during this time. José Carlos Rolo’s death marks the passing of a prominent figure in Algarve municipal politics. His career spanned education and public service, leaving a lasting imprint on Albufeira’s political and civic landscape.
