Passengers waiting at Lisbon’s Entrecampos train station were left shocked on Friday evening after an Alfa Pendular high speed train failed to stop at the station, passing through without warning and leaving dozens stranded during the busy rush hour period.
The incident occurred at around 5:35 pm, a peak time for commuters and long distance travellers heading into or out of the capital. Witnesses said the train slowed as it approached the platform, leading many to believe it would stop as scheduled, before accelerating and continuing southbound.
Several passengers said there were no prior announcements explaining the situation. Many had been waiting on the platform for some time and only realised something was wrong when the train doors failed to open and the carriages rolled past at speed. Confusion quickly spread, with travellers checking tickets and departure boards to confirm that the stop had not been cancelled.
Entrecampos is one of Lisbon’s key rail hubs, serving long distance, regional and suburban services. A missed stop on the Alfa Pendular network, which is marketed as Portugal’s premium intercity service, is highly unusual and immediately raised questions about safety procedures and operational oversight.
CP – Comboios de Portugal later confirmed that the train had failed to stop as planned, citing an operational issue that is still under investigation. The company said it was working to determine whether the incident was caused a signalling problem, human error or a technical fault on board the train.
CP stressed that there was no danger to passengers or railway infrastructure, and that the train continued safely to its next scheduled stop. Even so, the operator acknowledged the disruption caused and apologised to affected travellers.
Passengers who missed the service were forced to wait for alternative trains or rebook tickets, with some reporting delays of more than an hour. Others expressed frustration at the lack of immediate information, saying station staff initially appeared unsure how to respond.
Several travellers said they rely on Alfa Pendular services for time sensitive journeys and were concerned about the implications of such an error. Some questioned how a train could pass a major station without stopping, while others raised broader concerns about reliability on the national rail network.
Rail unions and transport analysts noted that incidents of this nature, while rare, often highlight pressure points in the system. Staffing shortages, tight timetables and ageing infrastructure have all been cited in recent years as challenges facing Portuguese rail services, particularly on long distance routes.
The incident also reignited debate about passenger communication during disruptions. Transport advocates argue that real time announcements and clearer guidance are essential to maintaining trust, especially when premium services are involved.
The Portuguese rail safety authority is expected to be notified of the event as part of standard procedure. Depending on the findings, further measures or recommendations could follow to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
For now, CP has said affected passengers will be entitled to compensation under existing customer rights rules, depending on the length of their delay. Travellers have been advised to contact customer support for assistance with refunds or rebooking.
While no injuries were reported, the unexpected failure to stop has left many questioning how such a lapse could occur on one of the country’s flagship rail services. As investigations continue, passengers and rail observers alike will be watching closely to see what explanations emerge and whether changes are introduced to ensure confidence in Portugal’s high speed rail network.
