Portugal has taken a step forward in medical innovation with the introduction of robotic surgery in urology at Tomar Hospital. The procedure marks a milestone for the Local Health Unit of Médio Tejo, which is advancing its surgical capabilities through modern technology.
The first operation performed using the new system was a radical prostatectomy on a patient with prostate cancer. The procedure involves removing the prostate gland while aiming to preserve key functions such as urinary control and, where possible, sexual function.
According to João Carlos Dias, robotic surgery significantly enhances precision and improves patient outcomes, particularly in complex cancer cases. The system allows surgeons to operate from a console controlling robotic instruments, enabling highly accurate movements through minimally invasive techniques.
This approach offers several benefits compared to traditional surgery, including reduced blood loss, lower risk of infection, and faster recovery times. The technology also provides high definition three dimensional visualization, allowing surgeons to perform delicate procedures with greater confidence.
The introduction of robotic urology surgery reflects a broader effort to modernize healthcare services in the region. As hospitals adopt advanced technologies, patients are expected to benefit from improved treatment quality and more efficient recovery processes.
