Portugal continues to strengthen its position as a leading travel destination as new research shows the country ranking among the most attractive places for international tourists planning spring holidays. A recent visitor sentiment analysis covering ten key global markets found strong interest in Portugal, placing it among the top destinations in Southern Europe. The study highlights growing global demand for travel experiences in the region, with Portugal ranking fourth overall among countries including Italy, Spain, France and Greece. Tourism analysts say the results confirm Portugal’s sustained appeal among international travelers and underline the country’s expanding reputation as a diverse destination beyond traditional beach tourism.

The survey gathered responses from travelers in major tourism markets including the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Canada, the Netherlands, Brazil, Italy, Spain and France. Among the respondents, around thirty two percent expressed interest in visiting Portugal during the spring travel season. Researchers collected a total of 6680 responses for the latest wave of the study, updating earlier findings that previously ranked Portugal as the third most sought after destination between July 2025 and June 2026. The updated ranking still places the country among Europe’s most competitive tourism destinations, reflecting continued international interest in Portuguese culture, landscapes and travel experiences.

Tourists cited several key factors influencing their decision to travel to Portugal. Safety, affordable travel options and the welcoming nature of local communities were among the most frequently mentioned reasons for choosing the country as a holiday destination. Visitors also highlighted Portugal’s unique blend of culture, heritage and natural beauty as important attractions. Analysts note that the country’s tourism appeal has evolved in recent years. While beaches and warm weather historically attracted large numbers of visitors, many travelers now seek cultural experiences including historic cities, local traditions and regional gastronomy.

The motivations for visiting Portugal vary across different nationalities and demographic groups. Brazilian travelers often highlight Portuguese cuisine as a major reason for visiting the country, reflecting the strong cultural connections between the two nations. British and Spanish tourists frequently prioritize coastal destinations and beach experiences, particularly during warmer seasons. Younger travelers tend to focus more on outdoor activities such as hiking, nature exploration and adventure tourism, while travelers over the age of fifty five often express greater interest in cultural heritage sites, museums and historical attractions located throughout the country.

Travel planning patterns also reveal changing behavior among international tourists considering trips to Portugal. Independent travel remains the dominant approach, with approximately fifty five percent of visitors booking flights and accommodation separately rather than through package deals. Interest in bundled travel packages still exists but represents a smaller portion of travelers. Around twenty six percent of respondents prefer transport and accommodation packages while eighteen percent opt for all inclusive holiday arrangements. Tourism experts say the rise of digital booking platforms has contributed to the growing preference for independently planned trips.

Technology is also beginning to influence how travelers organize their visits. The study shows increasing use of artificial intelligence tools to help create travel plans, particularly among visitors preparing longer stays. Despite the availability of planning tools, many travelers still prefer flexibility when arriving in Portugal. While about thirty three percent of visitors plan their trip in advance, sixty one percent say they arrive without detailed schedules, allowing them to explore cities and regions spontaneously. This behavior reflects the country’s reputation as a destination where travelers can easily discover cultural sites, landscapes and local experiences.

Tourist stays in Portugal are also becoming longer as international visitors seek more immersive experiences. According to the survey, fifty seven percent of travelers expect their trips to last more than seven nights. Budget expectations also provide insight into visitor spending patterns, with most tourists planning to spend between €1500 and €2000 during their stay. Tourism officials believe these trends support the country’s long term strategy of attracting visitors who stay longer, explore multiple regions and contribute more broadly to the local economy.
