Portugal’s Finance Minister, Joaquim Miranda Sarmento, has been discharged from hospital after being admitted earlier this week for medical observation, the Ministry of Finance confirmed.
The minister was hospitalised on February 25 at the Santa Maria Local Health Unit, where he remained under observation in the Neurology Service. According to an official statement released the ministry, he left the hospital this afternoon and is expected to resume his full duties next week.
Authorities stated that the minister is in stable condition and recovering well. The Ministry of Finance indicated that he will rest over the coming days before returning to work, ensuring continuity in the management of government financial affairs.
In an earlier communication, the Santa Maria Local Health Unit confirmed that the minister underwent standard and appropriate medical examinations in line with his clinical situation. The medical team decided to admit him for observation as a precautionary measure. Hospital officials described his condition as stable throughout his stay.
The brief hospitalisation drew attention given the minister’s central role in overseeing Portugal’s fiscal policy, budget planning and economic strategy. As Minister of State and Finance, Miranda Sarmento is responsible for managing public accounts, coordinating with European Union institutions on fiscal matters and guiding national economic policy.
Government sources have not provided further details regarding the specific medical condition that led to the hospital admission, citing privacy considerations. Officials emphasised that the decision to hospitalise him was precautionary and based on medical assessment.
During his absence, the Ministry of Finance continued operating under established internal procedures to ensure administrative continuity. Senior officials within the ministry maintained regular oversight of ongoing policy matters, including budget execution and financial coordination.
The Santa Maria Local Health Unit, located in Lisbon, is one of Portugal’s largest public hospital facilities and frequently handles cases involving members of government and public officials due to its specialised departments and clinical capacity.
Miranda Sarmento has served as Finance Minister during a period marked economic adjustments, fiscal consolidation measures and continued coordination with European financial frameworks. His anticipated return next week is expected to restore the normal pace of ministerial engagements, including parliamentary sessions and policy meetings.
For now, the Ministry of Finance has reassured the public that the minister’s health is stable and that he remains in regular contact with his team while recovering. Further updates are expected only if necessary.
