Portugal has highlighted the diversity of its agricultural sector with nearly 1,100 registered crop varieties listed in its latest national catalogue. The data, published the Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary Medicine, reflects the country’s rich horticultural heritage and ongoing development in farming innovation.
Tomatoes lead the list with 247 registered varieties, including well known names such as Buda, Centauro, Lusitano, and Zapateco. Sunflowers follow with 107 varieties, while corn ranks third with 104, demonstrating the importance of staple crops in both domestic production and agricultural research.
Other crops also feature prominently in the catalogue. Watermelons and melons each have 56 varieties, showcasing a broad range of options suited to different climates and cultivation methods. Peppers account for 55 varieties, while annual ryegrass and onions contribute to the diversity of both food production and agricultural sustainability.
