UEFA has launched a formal investigation following a heated confrontation between Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior and Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni during a Champions League clash in Lisbon that has since escalated beyond the pitch.

The incident occurred during Real Madrid’s 1–0 victory over Benfica at the Estádio da Luz on 17 February 2026. Late in the match, tensions flared between the two players, prompting Vinícius to report alleged discriminatory abuse. The referee subsequently activated UEFA’s anti discrimination protocol, leading to a temporary suspension of play for around 10 minutes while the matter was addressed.

In the days that followed, the focus shifted from the on field exchange to what was allegedly said. UEFA confirmed that it had appointed an ethics and disciplinary inspector to gather evidence, including player testimony, match reports and audiovisual material. The inspector’s findings will determine whether the case proceeds to UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body for a formal decision.

Real Madrid stated that the club has provided all relevant material available to support Vinícius’ complaint. The Brazilian international has previously been outspoken about discrimination in football, and the club’s response signals its intent to pursue a clear ruling through official channels.

Prestianni, meanwhile, has reportedly told investigators that while inappropriate language was used, it was not racist in nature. His camp has strongly denied allegations of racial abuse and argued that the situation has been framed inaccurately in public discourse. Benfica have publicly backed their player and indicated they will challenge any disciplinary measures they consider unjust.

UEFA has imposed a provisional one match suspension on Prestianni while the investigation continues. Benfica have confirmed their intention to appeal, though the winger is expected to miss the second leg at the Santiago Bernabéu as the process is unlikely to conclude before the fixture.

The provisional suspension does not represent a final verdict but reflects the seriousness with which UEFA is treating the matter. Under UEFA regulations, proven discriminatory conduct can carry significant sanctions, including multi match bans. The specific nature of the alleged language will be central to the disciplinary assessment.

The controversy now casts a shadow over the remainder of the tie. Real Madrid return home with a narrow advantage, while Benfica face the decisive leg without a key attacking option. Beyond team selection, the emotional atmosphere surrounding the match is likely to be intense.

UEFA’s investigation will need to reconcile player accounts, official reports and any corroborating evidence before reaching a conclusion. Until then, the case remains open, with both sporting and reputational implications for the players and clubs involved.
