Rede Expressos has announced a temporary nationwide fare reduction of up to 15 percent on journeys to several regions most affected Storm Kristin, as part of a broader effort to support mobility and relief operations. The measure applies to trips from anywhere in the country to destinations including Leiria, Marinha Grande, Pombal, Fátima, Castelo Branco, Santarém and Torres Novas, areas that suffered significant disruption following the storm’s passage. According to the company, the initiative aims to ease travel for family members, volunteers, support teams and residents seeking to provide assistance or return to affected communities. The price reduction comes amid increased demand for transport services, reflecting heightened public movement linked to emergency response and recovery efforts in central Portugal.

The national bus operator reported a sharp rise in passenger demand since the announcement of the measure, describing it as a sign of collective mobilisation driven solidarity. The company said facilitating access to impacted regions is a practical contribution to ensuring that aid, personnel and support reach areas where they are most urgently needed. With parts of the transport network disrupted fallen trees, damaged infrastructure and temporary closures, road based travel has become a critical alternative for many travellers. Rede Expressos stated that improving affordability during this period is intended to reduce barriers to movement at a time when coordinated response efforts depend heavily on accessible and reliable transport links.

Storm Kristin caused widespread damage across mainland Portugal, resulting in multiple fatalities, injuries and displacement, particularly in districts such as Leiria, Coimbra and Santarém. The storm led to power and water outages, school closures and significant interruptions to rail and road services. In response to the scale of the impact, the government declared a state of emergency covering dozens of municipalities, with further extensions expected. As recovery operations continue, transport providers are playing a key role in restoring connectivity. The fare reduction Rede Expressos forms part of a wider national response focused on mitigating disruption and supporting communities as emergency measures remain in place.
