Mercadona continues its steady expansion across Portugal with the announcement of a new supermarket in Amarante, further strengthening its footprint in the northern region of the country. The Spanish retail giant confirmed that the upcoming store will bring its total number of outlets in Portugal to 72, reinforcing a long term strategy focused on regional consolidation and customer accessibility. The new opening reflects the company’s continued investment in the Portuguese market, where it has been steadily growing its presence over recent years.
The new store is scheduled to open in October and will be located in the municipality of Amarante, within the Porto district. This expansion is particularly significant as the Porto region has become one of Mercadona’s strongest operational hubs in Portugal, already hosting 26 stores. The addition of another location in the area highlights the retailer’s confidence in local demand and its commitment to strengthening supply networks in the north. The company views this region as a key driver of its national growth strategy due to population density and consistent consumer activity.
According to Mercadona, the Amarante supermarket will feature a modern retail layout designed to enhance the customer experience through a wide range of specialised sections. The store will include a 1900 square metre sales area and offer departments such as butcher, fishmonger, deli, bakery and pastry, as well as fresh fruit and vegetable sections. In addition, customers will have access to a perfumery area, home care products, pet supplies, and a curated wine cellar selection, reflecting the company’s focus on combining everyday essentials with premium offerings.
A notable feature of the new store will be its ready to eat section, which will provide self service meals and a variety of prepared dishes available for takeaway or in store consumption. This area will be integrated into a dedicated space designed to accommodate customers who prefer convenience driven dining options. The inclusion of this service aligns with broader European retail trends, where supermarkets are increasingly evolving into hybrid spaces that combine grocery shopping with quick meal solutions and lifestyle oriented services.
While Mercadona has confirmed the development of the Amarante store, the company noted that its hiring process for the location is still ongoing. Recruitment efforts are expected to continue in the coming months as the retailer prepares for the store’s official opening. The expansion is anticipated to generate local employment opportunities and further strengthen Mercadona’s operational base in northern Portugal, reinforcing its long term commitment to the Portuguese retail landscape.
