Portugal is strengthening its position in European defence initiatives taking part in 16 projects funded under the European Defence Fund, marking a significant step in military and technological collaboration across the region. The participation represents more than €500 million in national involvement, highlighting the country’s growing role in strategic development.

The funding comes as the European Commission approved over €1 billion in total support for defence related innovation. Portuguese companies, research institutions, and military bodies have secured a notable share of this investment, focusing on enhancing capabilities and advancing cutting edge technologies.

Among the key initiatives, Portugal is leading a project coordinated INESC TEC aimed at developing disruptive technologies to protect underwater infrastructure. This area is increasingly important for safeguarding critical assets such as data and energy cables in the Atlantic.

The country is also involved in a consortium led Airbus to develop satellite systems for surveillance and space based reconnaissance. Additional projects include modernizing land based defence systems, such as armored vehicles and advanced weaponry, as well as innovations in materials like camouflage textiles.

Portugal’s participation reflects a broader push within Europe to enhance defence autonomy and technological resilience. As geopolitical challenges evolve, the country’s expanding role in these projects positions it as an increasingly important contributor to regional security and innovation.
