A 30 year old foreign national has been placed in preventive detention after being arrested at Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport for an attempted robbery involving a bladed weapon, authorities confirmed.
According to the Public Security Police, the arrest followed a rapid response triggered citizens who alerted officers to a robbery in progress inside a commercial establishment at the airport. The incident occurred at approximately 8:50 pm, when bystanders reported that a man was threatening individuals with a knife while attempting to commit theft.
Officers from the Airport Security and Border Control Division responded immediately to the scene. Upon arrival, police confirmed the situation and apprehended the suspect in flagrante delicto, meaning he was caught in the act of committing the alleged crime. Authorities stated that the swift coordination between the public and law enforcement was instrumental in preventing further escalation.
In an official statement, the Public Security Police said the defendant is charged with attempted robbery using a bladed weapon, a crime classified as violent under Portuguese law. The suspect was subsequently brought before a judicial authority for an initial hearing. Following questioning, the court ordered that he remain in preventive detention while investigations continue.
Police have not disclosed further details about the suspect’s identity, nationality or potential prior record, citing the ongoing judicial process. However, officials stressed that there was no broader threat to airport operations and that the situation was quickly brought under control.
Humberto Delgado Airport, Portugal’s main international gateway, handles millions of passengers each year and maintains heightened security measures in coordination with national and European security frameworks. Law enforcement units stationed at the airport are trained to respond rapidly to incidents involving public safety, including theft, violence and border related offences.
The Public Security Police highlighted the importance of civic responsibility in this case, noting that timely communication from witnesses allowed officers to intervene before the situation could worsen. Authorities encouraged members of the public to report suspicious or criminal activity promptly, emphasising that collaboration between citizens and police is essential for maintaining safety in high traffic areas such as airports.
Incidents involving attempted robbery at transport hubs are treated with particular seriousness due to the concentration of travellers and commercial activity. Security forces continue to monitor the area closely as part of routine patrols and preventive measures. The investigation remains ongoing under the supervision of the competent judicial authorities. Police have indicated that further information may be released as the legal process advances.
